Annual Physical Q & A

How do you prepare for an annual physical?

Before your physical begins, Millennium Park Medical Associates asks you to complete a confidential patient survey that covers topics like:

  • Your personal and family medical history
  • Your current medication and health status
  • Your lifestyle information, including diet and activity level
  • Your sexual and reproductive history

The answers to these questions give Dr. Khan an excellent base from which to start your physical examination.

What happens during an annual physical?

An annual physical is a comprehensive health review. During your appointment with Dr. Khan, she checks the following areas:

Cardiovascular

Dr. Khan assesses your general appearance, inspects your eye health, listens to your heartbeat, and may run blood tests if needed.

Gastrointestinal

Dr. Khan feels your abdomen to check for tenderness or muscle rigidity, and may listen for bowel sounds.

Musculoskeletal

Dr. Khan manipulates your muscles, bones, and joints, and tests your reflexes. She may also observe you seated and moving to gauge how comfortable you are and whether you have any postural issues.

Neurological

Dr. Khan assesses your mental awareness, speed of thought, motor function, balance, and sensory responses.

Vital signs

Dr. Khan documents your blood pressure, respiratory rate, pulse rate, temperature, height, and weight.

Dr. Khan also takes a general look at your skin tone and pallor and conducts a head, eye, ear, nose, and throat exam.

What screenings does an annual physical include?

Physicals including screening for diseases and health disorders you’re at risk of developing based on your age and medical history. Dr. Khan may screen you for:

  • Blood sugar levels
  • Breast cancer and cervical cancer
  • Colon and lung cancer
  • Depression
  • Diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • Prostate cancer and testicular cancer
  • STDs

Early detection can be lifesaving. If you have any concerns about chronic diseases, discuss them with Dr. Khan, even if you’re not high risk.

Why do I need an annual physical?

Dr. Khan may recommend you have a physical for several reasons, including monitoring changes in your overall physical health, checking for diseases or medical conditions, and determining whether you need further tests. You may also need a physical as part of your employment.

A physical provides you with confidence that you’re taking control over your health and well-being. If you’re overdue for an annual wellness check, call Millennium Park Medical Associates or book an appointment online today.
